This program is used for plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy/peritendinitis, and heel bursitis conditions. We also commonly use this treatment program for pain associated with arthritis, flat feet, metatarsal glia, and several other foot/ankle conditions. We modify the treatment location based on your condition.
The first visit includes a physician evaluation, diagnostic ultrasound (if indicated), and osteopathic manipulation of the foot/ankle. Your specialist co-pay will be due at the time of service.
Our protocol is six sessions of combined Shockwave Therapy and Class IV Medical Laser over 8-10 weeks. This treatment is performed by one of our advanced modality providers. We can begin your treatment at your first visit if desired.
Healing and regeneration continue for around one month after your last treatment and you may notice continued improvement during that time.
A discount is provided for patients with bilateral symptoms.
This package includes 6 Shockwave treatments and 6 Medical Laser treatments to the treated area(s). We include 1 additional single laser treatment as needed for flare-ups during your treatment duration if needed.

We ask that you continue conservative care that is medically accepted or was previously advised for your condition by a qualified health care professional. Such as, but not limited to, orthotics for plantar fasciitis and pes planus, heel cups for heel pad syndrome, weight loss if advised by your primary care physician, decrease in excessive running and standing on hard surfaces for long periods of time, etc.
You may experience soreness for 1-2 days after the treatments. Please avoid or limit the use of ice during therapy, and do not take NSAIDS in the first 24-48 hours after a Shockwave treatment. Attempt to avoid NSAIDS completely if possible. Tylenol can be used for pain as directed.
No. Insurance does not cover Shockwave Therapy or Class IV Medical Laser Therapy. These treatments are considered investigational and therefore are not covered by insurance at this time. Only your evaluation, diagnostic ultrasound (if indicated), and OMT at your initial visit is covered by insurance.
Treatments are generally well tolerated with patients experiencing mild discomfort and a deep ache during treatment. Our providers will adjust the intensity to within the comfort level of the patient.
No. The treatment relies heavily on biofeedback from the patient to the provider. We need to know the very specific areas (down to the size of dime) in the injured area to pulse that area more intensely. The pain level should be tolerable and we only can monitor this parameter if the patient is not anesthetized.
The typical treatment is 7 to 10 minutes per foot.
We recommend treatments be spaced 5-7 days initally. Further into your treatment they may be spaced 10-21 days depending on your condition and response to treatment.
This depends on the nature of the condition being treated. Most plantar fasciitis patients need 6 treatments.
Some patients feel relief after just 1 session. If this occurs we still recommend completing a full treatment as advised. The initial treatments tend to treat the pain very rapidly and initiate the healing response which takes time. The maximum result is usually seen within several months after the entire treatment is complete as the body continues to heal the area.
Yes. We use it effectively with Class IV medical laser.
Most patients report pain relief immediately following the treatment. Within two to four hours after your session, you may have some soreness in the area. The soreness should not prevent you from continuing day to day activities.
Since some patients feel relief after 1 session or before completion of a full treatment, we recommend that you do not exert the injured area. Ice packs or excessive heat are not recommended for 48 hours after each treatment. It is also advised you do not take Motrin after treatment for discomfort. Instead, take Tylenol as directed. Ice and ibuprofen can blunt the stimulation that Shockwave produces and be counterproductive.
No. We cannot being your program for three weeks after the injection as the steroid will interfere with the regenerative/healing tissue chemicals (cytokines and chemokines) that our therapy is stimulating.
Yes. If you are currently in a physical therapy program for plantar fasciitis we can coordinate our treatment to work with your PT team concurrently.
Yes. Dr. Barrett can perform an ultrasound guided steroid injection if desired.
