Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a form of orthobiologic regenerative medicine that concentrates and utilizes the powerful self-healing properties and growth factors contained in platelets that your body uses to heal and revitalize diseased, damaged or aging tissues.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) consists of plasma, or the clear liquid portion of blood, and concentrated platelets, a type of blood component that plays a crucial role in healing. Platelets contain growth factors that trigger cellular healing and stimulate tissue regeneration in damaged or diseased tissue. PRP is a biologic compound that contains more concentrated platelets than normal creating an intense healing environment.
We use a proprietary system for platelet harvesting and preparation that uses special collection equipment to not only concentrate the platelets but also remove the majority of the inflammatory white blood cells from the PRP making for a better, more purified PRP for injection and aesthetic services.
After creating PRP from the patient’s own blood, the biologic agent is injected into the target area, such as an injured or arthritic joint or a diseased tendon. In many cases, Dr. Barrett uses ultrasound to precisely guide the injection. The concept is to increase the concentration of specific signaling molecules and hormones, called growth factors, in a targeted area to initiate and accelerate the healing process on molecular, cellular, and tissue levels.
